There’s a common misconception that – since Invisalign aligners cover your teeth – you can’t develop cavities during the teeth-straightening process. That’s not the case! Since the trays are removable, your teeth are still exposed to common culprits of decay, like sugar, which is why it’s so important that you commit to good habits, like flossing every day. If you’re not sure how to floss with Invisalign, we have good news: you can find a quick guide below.

First, Why Is It Important to Floss Every Day?

As mentioned above, your teeth will decay without the right best practices in place. However, that’s not the only reason you should floss every day. Skipping this crucial step of the oral hygiene process increases your risk of gum disease as well, which is a condition that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

It’s also important to note that the development of any oral health problem – from a small cavity to a severe infection – will bring your orthodontic treatment to a stop. So, if you want to keep your smile healthy and stay on-track with your treatment plan, you need to commit to flossing each morning or evening!

How To: Floss with Invisalign

Like many other patients, flossing may not be your favorite part of your day. There is good news though: completing this step of your oral hygiene regimen isn’t difficult with Invisalign. All you have to do is:

  • Remove your aligners, rinse them with clean water, and place them in their case
  • Grab your floss of choice and glide it between your teeth
  • Create a “C” motion with the floss on each side, removing plaque in the process

Repeat the last two steps as needed until you’ve effectively cleaned between all of your teeth.

6 Additional Ways to Keep Your Smile Healthy

Of course, flossing is just one crucial component of the process. To keep your smile decay and infection-free, it’s also important that you:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day (and for two full minutes each time)
  • Rinse with mouthwash for 30-60 seconds every morning or night
  • Schedule a dental checkup and cleaning every six months
  • Don’t overindulge on sugary and starchy snacks, like potato chips
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and prevent dry mouth
  • Break bad habits, like smoking and chewing on ice cubes
