Getting braces is a big step toward achieving a healthier, straighter smile—but that first week can come with some challenges! As your teeth and mouth adjust to the new appliances, it’s completely normal to experience a bit of soreness, sensitivity, and changes to your routine. The good news? These initial growing pains are temporary, and a few small strategies can help you feel more comfortable during the transition. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.
1. Stick to Soft Foods
Chewing with braces can feel uncomfortable at first, so stock up on soft, braces-friendly meals like mashed potatoes, yogurt, scrambled eggs, soups, smoothies, boiled pasta and rice, and other similar items. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could damage your brackets or wires. When you first begin your treatment, your orthodontist will provide you with a list of specific dietary restrictions for you to keep in mind. However, do yourself a favor during that first week and have plenty of easy-to-eat options waiting for you in your pantry.
2. Use Orthodontic Wax
If any brackets or wires are irritating your cheeks or lips, orthodontic wax is your best friend. Just pinch off a small piece, roll it into a ball, and press it over the problem area to create a smooth barrier and reduce friction. Your orthodontist will give you some of this wax at the start of your treatment, but it’s also available at most grocery stores or pharmacies.
3. Rinse with Salt Water
As the soft tissues of your mouth become accustomed to the brackets and wires pressing against them, they might become irritated and form uncomfortable, temporary sores. A warm saltwater rinse (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) can help soothe sore spots and promote healing. Rinse gently for 30 seconds a few times a day during that first week. If your sores are persistent or worsening, let your orthodontist know.
4. Keep Up with Oral Hygiene
Braces can trap food particles more easily, so brushing and flossing thoroughly is especially important now and moving forward. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush, interdental brushes, or a water flosser to help clean around each of the brackets and wires effectively. Aim to brush after every meal if possible (a travel-sized toothbrush can help with this), and when you can’t brush immediately, you can at least swish some water around your mouth.
Remember, it may feel like a big adjustment now, but soon, having braces will become part of your normal routine. By taking care of your mouth and following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, more confident smile!
